Cell density measurement in the Biotechnology

 

The fiber optic turbidity measuring system was developed by Aquasant for the biotechnology and is mainly used for the online measurement of the cell density in bioreactors and fermenters. The measured turbidity signal in function of the cell density is an essential additional regulation parameter for research, development and production.
The turbidity measuring system is also used in other industries, as example in the chemical industry for the surveillance of the crystallization or the determination of solids.

    Measuring principle

    An infrared transmitter set to 940 nm, carries out the optical coupling of an infrared radiation in a fiber-optics cable for the emitting signal (1). The probe introduces the radiation into the medium (2) by both sides at the same time. A high precision optical receiver (3) sends the reflected infrared radiation towards the rear through a fiber-optics cable for the receiving signal (4) to the measuring unit which evaluates it.
